The part-time Inclusion and Special Educational Needs SENCo degree is designed for SENCos who hold the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENCo). It is for those who wish to continue their studies and gain a full MEd with a specific focus on understanding the individual needs of children.

On our specialised Inclusion, and Special Educational Needs (SENCo) postgraduate degree, you will study modules from courses such as Autism, Language, Literacy and Dyslexia, Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties and Inclusion and Special Educational. Those who are undertaking the MEd will also work towards completion of a dissertation under the supervision of University of Birmingham staff. 

The Inclusion and Special Educational Needs (ISEN) programme uses a variety of delivery modes including distance learning and blended learning depending on the pathway taken. The MEd dissertation supervision may be completed wholly online.

For those holding the NASENCo award who wish to follow a leadership pathway you may also be interested in the MEd Educational Leadership 


You will be required to take the Research Methods in Education Module. You will also need to take two modules from one of the following specific practice-based courses: Literacies, Languages and Dyslexia; Social and Emotional Behavioural Difficulties; Special Education: Autism (Children); Inclusion and Special Educational Needs (ISEN)

Each module is worth 20 credits. There is also a compulsory 60 credit dissertation for the MEd

From September 2020 the fees are fixed at this price for each year of study for the duration of the programme.

Scholarships and Loans

You may be eligible for a postgraduate loan which provides up to £11,836 for courses starting on or after 1 August 2022 for taught and research Masters courses in all subject areas.

Our Standard Requirements

You must hold the following academic qualifications:

  • A good first degree
  • The National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENCo)

You must also hold:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS),
  • OR Qualified Teacher Learning Status (QTLS)
  • OR Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS - appropriate for ages 0-5 only)

In addition, you need to have completed your induction period.

English language requirements

In order to undertake this programme of study, you will need to demonstrate that you have a good level of written and spoken English. You can demonstrate your level of English with IELTS or alternative qualifications. Speakers of English as a second language will be required to hold an IELTs 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band or equivalent qualification. 

International Requirements

The Inclusion and Special Educational Needs (ISEN) course is part-time. In year two, the course is either distance learning or blended learning depending on the pathway taken. Blended learning consists of a mixture of both campus-based and distance learning elements. In year three, dissertation supervision may take place wholly online.


This degree is designed to supplement SENCOs already working in the field who wish to follow a more specialist special educational needs pathway. It is highly suited to those who aspire to develop inclusion within schools and across local areas and multi academy trusts. The qualification is also of use for those wishing to work in local authority or advocacy roles.     

Many of our graduates successfully apply for roles working with children and young people with special educational needs. The course also provides an opportunity to work towards a further professional qualification in the field of Education, which includes progression to a PhD.
