Module Overview

This module will provide the students with the opportunity to acquire a detailed understanding of the pathogenesis, natural history, assessment and management of the complications and also reconstruction of acute musculoskeletal injuries as well as conditions requiring rehabilitation, the methods available and the various settings where rehabilitation may take place.

The module will aim to develop skills that the students need in order to provide state-of-the-art assessment, management and dealing with complications of musculoskeletal injuries and identify the skills required to research, plan, provide and justify the appropriate rehabilitation programme for a variety of trauma-inflicted patients. The students will also be taught the skills necessary to develop a coherent and individually-tailored management to specific patients.  This will be based on up-to-date clinical research and evidence-based practice.  They will also develop skills in the interpretation of research data, allowing them to critically appraise published data to allow them to make accurately informed clinical decisions.

In order to see how the students’ skills are translated into clinical practice, they will be provided with the opportunity to observe management of musculoskeletal injuries at UHB.

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate the understanding of the breadth and magnitude of musculoskeletal injuries and their pathogenesis and identify appropriate rehabilitation programmes for the early to intermediated phases of trauma rehabilitation.
  • To critically analyse published research data that relate to musculoskeletal injury management and rehabilitation programmes and provide a management plan.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the assessment of musculoskeletal injuries and describe and detail the long-term prognosis for musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Identify and differentiate treatment and rehabilitation modalities for late through to functional stages of injury healing, including chronic traumatic injuries, as well as rehabilitation considerations.
  • To show that the students will appreciate the importance of multi-disciplinary and cross-specialty approach to the assessment and management of musculoskeletal injuries.
