Hosted by Dr Asif Iqbal, Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences

Visits November-December 2019

Edward A Fisher, MD, PhD, MPH, is the Leon Charney Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine. At NYU, he is also the Director of the Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Director of the Marc and Ruti Bell Program in Vascular Biology. He is a graduate of the NYU School of Medicine and received his clinical training at Duke and Harvard. He also holds a PhD from MIT in biochemistry and nutrition and was a post-doctoral fellow at the NIH in molecular genetics.

Professor Fisher is a pioneer in studies of atherosclerosis and its regression.  He heads the Preventive Cardiology Centre and Vascular Biology Research Programme. His expertise spans basic mechanisms of atherosclerosis to clinical approaches to cardiovascular disease. He has won numerous awards, is highly regarded in the UK and was Eastman Visiting Professor (Oxford, 2010-2011) in Cardiovascular Medicine, the Hugh Sinclair Lecturer at the British Atherosclerosis Society meeting (2017), and visiting scholar at Cambridge (2019).

Prof Fisher has begun studies of the effects of platelets on the trafficking and inflammatory phenotype of macrophages in atherosclerosis, and the roles in vascular disease of “epigenetic memories” in the major cell types of atherosclerotic plaques.

While here, Professor Fisher will give seminars based on his research and their clinical implications.
