ExACT - Extended anticoagulation treatment for VTE: a randomised trial

ExACTA randomised controlled trial of extended warfarin treatment versus routine warfarin treatment for the prevention of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) and post thrombotic syndrome (PTS) in patients being treated for a first episode of unprovoked VTE.

Overview Blood clots occur quite commonly in the legs and lungs. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the umbrella term given to blood clots in the legs (DVT) and the lungs (PE). Although sometimes there is an obvious cause such as immobility or surgery, often there is no obvious reason for the clot occurring. There are a few people who, after having had a blood clot, are at a very high risk of having another one. There is also a slight risk that these people will also have a clot in their lungs which can lead to damage to the lungs or even death. The ExACT Study is attempting to identify those people at highest risk of having a second clot and to see if by giving treatment for longer it is possible to prevent a second clot from happening.
