We are pleased to announce that Dr Dennis Chan from UCL, Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, will be presenting a CHBH Seminar on Thursday 5th December at 13:00.

In with the new: the changing environment of Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis

The detection of the initial stages of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), prior to the onset of dementia, poses a major challenge for current clinical diagnostic approaches based on pen-and-paper assessment of cognition. In this talk Dr Chan will describe VR-based diagnostic strategies based around detection of entorhinal cortex (EC) dysfunction, given the EC represents the site of initial degeneration in AD. These strategies build on the role of the EC in navigation, in turn related to the spatially-related firing of EC neurons observed in animals, and as such this approach has added value for translational research. Dr Chan will also discuss new options for testing real life navigation and the potential of tech-based approaches for population-level disease detection prior to symptom onset.
