About INLOGOV

Since its establishment in 1968, the Institute of Local Government Studies (INLOGOV) has played a pivotal role in advancing the study and teaching of public management. A core purpose is to enhance the Department of Public Administration and Policy (DPAP)’s external impact by fostering strong connections with policymakers, local authorities, and public sector leaders. Through high-quality policy engagement, knowledge exchange and professional education, Inlogov strengthens the department’s reputation and influence and helps develop the next generation of public management professionals.

Teaching

INLOGOV aims to develop the next generation of local government leaders, in the UK and internationally, through teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, executive education and CPD programmes. With a history as the UK’s largest provider of postgraduate education and training in public administration and management, its Public Management and Leadership apprenticeship, developed in collaboration with sector leaders, has supported over 250 senior local government managers over the past seven years.

The Local Government ‘Exchange’

INLOGOV facilitates ongoing dialogue between academics, local government practitioners and policy-makers through monthly online lunchtime sessions. Their aim is to provide an opportunity to come together to take stock of current events and identify possible avenues for action and collaboration. By sharing our collective knowledge and networks, we ensure that we all have a good understanding of the latest developments in local government and what they mean for our work, research, teaching and learning. The sessions use a conversational format, driven by the interests of participants. Some sessions are slightly more structured around a theme, with invited specialists who will provide short initial provocations. Previous topics have included the cost of living crisis, local elections, local government finance, combined authorities, and public health.

Policy Engagement and Consultancy

INLOGOV provides advice and support to local authorities, central government, and other organisations based upon our extensive research and understanding of the practical challenges faced by officers, members and professionals in the field of local governance and public management. Recent projects have included strategic commissioning, evaluation, chief executive training, and devolution policy. We support academics across DPAP and the School of Government to engage effectively with policy makers and managers.
