Abstract

This paper reports the findings of the first detailed evaluation of Prudence Foundation’s Cha-Ching curriculum, a teaching package including animated music videos, teaching materials, suggestions for activities and evaluation materials for elementary schools, covering Earn, Save, Spend and Donate.  The analysis benefits from matched pre- and post-tests for 213,514 students across 5 countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam) from 2017 to 2020.  It shows improvements in knowledge, attitudes and behaviour across the five countries with average effect sizes of 0.4;  0.29 and 0.2 respectively. Modelling indicates that the improvements are higher than would be expected over the same time period in the absence of the curriculum. The results also indicate a general advantage for students in schools where more of their classmates participate in Cha-Ching.
