GCfE Book Conversation with Joseph Twist – Mystical Islam and Cosmopolitanism in Contemporary German Literature: Openness to Alterity

About this Event

At 5.00pm on 22 April 2021, Dr Maria Roca Lizarazu (University of Birmingham) and our very own Franziska Wolf (GCfE) will be in conversation with Dr Joseph Twist (University College Dublin) to discuss his book Mystical Islam and Cosmopolitanism in Contemporary German Literature: Openness to Alterity (2018). Described by reviewers as ‘an excellent study for anyone interested in the literary voices of contemporary Muslim writers in Germany’ and ‘a powerful counter-model of both conventional ideas about (post)religious identities and academia's traditional way of reading (and thereby constructing) Muslim authors,’ Joseph Twist’s analysis suggests new ways of thinking about identity and community. Within the course of 90 minutes, we seek to explore how contemporary German Muslim writers establish community beyond a single guiding principle, and ask whether there are parallels to cultural developments in other European countries.
