Catalysing Change Through Higher Education

Solutions discussed:

Invest in higher education institutions

Such investments can be through providing funding for more research on Sustainable Development Goals, and for training of involved teachers and researchers. Funding can also be used for scholarships to ensure global access to quality education for a more diverse group of persons.

Universities should provide flexible learning and teaching modes to adapt to a changing world

A flexible curriculum can help universities get the best from their students, researchers and academics, as it ensures continuity during disruptive changes, like pandemics. With this, the ability of research to provide solutions to real life problems can be maintained, which was evident during the pandemic where flexibility encouraged a fast turnaround time in innovations that heralded vaccine developments.

Flexible Curriculum

Extend research areas beyond conventional areas

Taking up new and unexplored areas of research is a way through which universities can ensure positive change. This will provide knowledge, capacity and expertise of new, unexpected and emerging issues like SDGs. Research should be interdisciplinary, as it increases the possibility of comprehensive outcomes and findings.

Foster local and international university-to-university collaborations to boost research capacity

Given the global geopolitics and global changes being experienced, university collaborations can increase research opportunities and cultural awareness, and ensure that global challenges are tackled by harnessing the collective power of minds.
