Method for 3D printing of soft materials in fine detail

University of Birmingham’s Healthcare Technologies Institute scientists have developed an innovative approach to the 3D printing of soft materials with additive manufacturing. The aim of the study is to produce replacement biomaterials such as heart valves, blood vessels and even biocompatible plugs to treat bone and cartilage damage.

In an interview with Materials Today, Professor Liam Grover explained how the University of Birmingham’s study has improved on the complexity of the structures that we are able to 3D bioprint by looking at the support bed used during the printing process.

Professor Grover, Director of the Healthcare Technologies Institute said: “The paper improves our understanding of the mechanics of the support bed used for manufacturing parts by 3D bioprinting”.
