As part of the European Research Council-funded CATENA project, ITSEE is recruiting a full-time PhD student to start in September 2020. The project we propose is to collect and examine the scholia on the Gospel of Matthew identified as ‘anepigrapha’, in order to assess the extent to which these represent an early exegetical collection. However, we would be open to other related proposals, especially from candidates who have Greek and Syriac and would be interested in examining the scholia of Severus of Antioch on the New Testament. The expectation is that the doctoral thesis will take the form of the first-ever scholarly edition and commentary on these passages.
All candidates should have an excellent first degree in a related subject and have completed (or be on the point of completing) a Master’s degree, with a high level of proficiency in New Testament Greek. Experience of working with manuscripts would be an advantage. Subject to funding confirmation, the award will provide a stipend equivalent to £20,500 per annum for three years.
