Brain Tumour Funding Opportunities

Driving innovation in brain tumour research requires sustained investment and support. This page highlights a range of funding opportunities — from large-scale collaborative programmes to early career awards and translational research schemes — designed to accelerate progress from lab to clinic.

The University of Birmingham’s QR Research and Knowledge Exchange funding programmes support ambitious projects that deliver exciting research and knowledge exchange activities with policymakers, communities and users of research, as well as activities that seek to improve the underlying research environment at the University.

Applications are now invited across the following three QR Research and Knowledge Exchange funding programmes for projects of up to nine months in duration, to commence in mid-October 2025, ending no later than July 2026.

Enhancing Research Culture Fund

This fund supports activities that contribute to an inspiring and inclusive research environment for the University’s entire research community, including research support staff. The University is particularly keen to support activities which facilitate collaboration and shared learning among excellent researchers, activities which promote connections and collaboration between researchers working across different disciplines, as well as activities which seek to support research excellence and the development of postdoctoral researchers.

Applicants can apply for up to £50,000 from the Enhancing Research Culture Fund.

Participatory Research Fund

Participatory or co-produced research strengthens research outcomes by involving the communities and users of research in the research process, better recognising their experience, needs and preferences, and giving greater agency to communities to put findings into practice. Participatory Research Funding can be used to cover the costs of co-produced research and/or to run capacity-building activities such as projects that pilot innovative participatory research models, or projects that develop materials to support researchers in developing their skills in participatory research.

Applicants can apply for up to £25,000 from the Participatory Research Fund.

Policy Support Fund

The Policy Support Fund is designed to support universities undertaking research with local, regional, national and international structures. The University is particularly keen to support activities which demonstrate the potential for transformative policy impact, as well as activities designed to support researchers seeking to track and evidence the impact of policy activities. This could include taking practical steps now in order to enable researchers to track the future downstream effects of policy change.

Applicants can apply for up to £50,000 from the Policy Support Fund.

Eligibility

Projects across all three funding streams can be led by Academic or Professional Services members of staff who have a current employment contract with the University that extends to at least 31 July 2026.

Other opportunities in Cancer/Brain

Medical Research Council (MRC) - (£300-£500k)

The research areas focus on understanding and reducing cancer treatment side effects and long-term impacts, especially in children. This includes investigating biological causes, improving palliative and rehabilitative care, and addressing psychological well-being. The aim is to enhance patient quality of life and identify factors predicting treatment efficacy and side effect severity.
