Clean Air and Water
Securing global access to clean air and water
We combine environmental science understanding with health, engineering, economic and social sciences to develop practical solutions to improve lives worldwide.
We are working globally to identify the sources of air pollution, to develop solutions to control emissions and deliver clean air. We use state of the science measurement approaches, numerical models and one of three national air quality supersites, leading research programmes from Birmingham to Bejing and from India to Brazil.
At the University of Birmingham, we address water-related challenges in the natural and human-influenced water cycle, like climate change, pollution, and water management. Our interdisciplinary team works on global issues such as droughts, floods, and pollution. With advanced facilities like the Ecolaboratory, we develop sustainable solutions for water security and environmental health.
Understanding and improving our environment globally is essential to protecting our health, using our natural resources appropriately and underpinning our prosperity. Researchers across the University are leading efforts globally to develop and apply the best science in support of solutions to the biggest challenges of our generation, including access to clean air and water for all.
