DOMUS, the Latin term for home, is the place where a collaborative cluster of historians work on the social, political and cultural histories of schooling, education and childhood. 

This event, which will launch the DOMUS research centre, offers the opportunity to discuss the place of memory and commemoration in public history- making. These issues will be considered in the context of urban histories relating to children, war and the city of Birmingham.

Discussion will follow screening of a 30-minute film ‘Beyond the Battlefield’ directed by filmmaker Sam Lockyer.

  • Welcome: Professor Jane Martin, Director DOMUS Research Centre 
  • Film Screening of the 30-minute film ‘Beyond the Battlefield’ with director, Sam Lockyer 
  • Introduced by Professor Ian Grosvenor (DOMUS, Director Voices of War and Peace Centre) and Dr Nicola Gauld (Co-ordinator for Voices of War and Peace: the Great War and Its Legacy) 
  • Followed by a 20-minute Q&A session chaired by Dr Laura Day-Ashley (DOMUS).
  • Panel members: Professor Ian Grosvenor, Sam Lockyer, Dr Kevin Myers, Dr Sian Roberts 
  • Respondent: Professor Julie McLeod, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Capability) University of Melbourne, corresponding international member, DOMUS.
