Professor Bob Stone, Director of the Human Interface Technologies Team at the University of Birmingham, has recently been interviewed by New Electronics magazine.

In the article, Professor Stone reflects on his more than 30-year career in virtual reality (VR), from his first encounter with VR at NASA's Ames Research Center in 1987 through to his current role at the University of Birmingham, where he focuses on human-centred research and design issues relevant to future interactive technologies.

Professor Stone addresses the hype which has surrounded VR and emphasises the importance the Human Interface Technologies (HIT) Team at Birmingham places on practical teaching and developing credible applications which solve real- world challenges.

Established in 2003, the HIT Team's research covers task and usability analysis; human factors integration; ergonomics; the design and evaluation of advanced interfaces, including wearable computing, virtual, augmented and “mixed” reality; and telerobotics and telepresence projects. The team regularly works on behalf of and in collaboration with a range of partners in defence, healthcare, heritage and telerobotics / telepresence.

New Electronics is the electronics industry's leading magazine and a central hub for design engineers.
