Welcome to the Department of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering (EESE), where we are proud of our long and distinguished history in exceptional teaching and research.

Our range of programmes in electronic, electrical, and systems engineering will equip you to meet the technological challenges of the 21st century, from autonomous vehicles [interior of car], embedded computation [electrical board], and renewable energy [wind turbines], to human machine interactions [scientists working on a robot], mechatronics and robotics [students experimenting with equipment]. Your first year at Birmingham

Your first year as an Electronic and Electrical Engineering student at the University of Birmingham will be an interesting and exciting time full of new experiences and challenges.

Here are a few of the highlights you can expect from your first year:

  • Electronic and Electrical Engineering enables sensing, power, communication and control in increasingly autonomous technologies. You will learn the fundamentals of the subject through lectures, tutorials and exploratory lab classes.

  • You will gain an understanding of the essentials of digital electronics, software design and human-machine interactions.

  • The above skills will prepare the way for embedding decision-making and control into electrical machines, which you will study and apply in your second year, when every student designs and builds a robot.

  • Laboratory classes will take place in new state-of-the-art teaching facilities that contain over £400k worth of equipment dedicated to electronic and electrical engineering.

  • You will build sensor and transducer circuits in the laboratory and learn how to apply computer aided design and simulation tools.

  • Throughout your studies, you will be appointed a personal tutor who will be your mentor, helping you to make good use of feedback on your work and to develop the skills of the Birmingham Engineer – a graduate attractive to future employers.

  • We have an award winning student society, Electrical Engineering Society (EESE Soc). Led by students from across all year groups, EESE Soc organise a wealth of social and academic events for you to get involved in.

  • Our degree courses, which are accredited by the Institution of Engineering Technology (IET), are continually assessed and updated with input from industrial advisors alongside consultation with students.

By using the knowledge we had gained, we made the whole car, from the structure, to the internal circuit and the code in the microchip controlling movements."

"The most attractive part of Electronic and Electrical Engineering is the combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
