On 9 November 2021 IEL Director Professor Martin Trybus contributed a lecture on the EU law of defence procurement and a workshop session to the 5th installment of the European Security and Defence College Expert Level Course on European Armaments Cooperation taking place in Rome.
This week long course is delivered every year under the leadership of the Austrian Ministry of Defence. Procurement experts from the ministries of defence of the participating Member States of the European Defence Agency receive training in form of a 'masterclass' on defence procurement in Europe. The teaching is delivered by a range of experts from relevant national and international institutions and academics from Europe and the US. Professor Trybus also contributed to the course in 2019 (Zagreb, Croatia), 2018 (Maribor, Slovenia), 2017 (Stockholm), and 2016 (Vienna). In 2020 the course had to be cancelled because of the Covid pandemic. Professor Trybus has written extensively on defence procurement in Europe, including his monograph Buying Defence and Security in Europe (CUP, 2014) translated into Mandarin Chinese in 2017.
