Christopher Haworth

Dr Christopher Haworth, a Lecturer in Music, led a ‘show and tell’ installation on a series of interactive music projects he has created in collaboration with Gascia Ouzounian (University of Oxford) and Peter Bennett (University of Bristol).

Held as part of Digital Design Weekend at the Victoria and Albert Museum, 23-24 Sept 2017, the workshop included 'Paragraph VII', an interactive realisation of Cornelius Cardew's seminal experimental music work 'The Great Learning', and 'Long for this World', an app that lets listeners create their own 'sleep soundscapes'. Created in collaboration with over 20 composers, sound artists and performers, in 'Long for this World' users draw from a bank of sounds to create individualised mixes to listen to during sleep.

The project is supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council Digital Transformations Theme.

Dr Haworth's research interests lie in the broad areas of electronic music and sound art, using a mixture of historiographic, philosophical, and ethnographic research methods. His current research focuses on the musical uses of computer networks, including the Internet, from the late 1970s to the present. He composes computer music, often incorporating principles from psychoacoustics, music psychology, and cybernetics.
