Marina's interests span all areas of radar, signal processing and remote sensing with the current focus on: 

  • development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  • active and passive Terahertz (THz) sensing
  • intelligent sensors and provision of situational awareness for autonomous platforms
  • 3D  image for scene reconstruction with applications ranging from automotive sensing for future autonomous vehicles to detection, tracking and classification of stealth targets
  • multistatic radar
  • algorithms for automatic target classification  and recognition (including CNN and DNN)
  • data fusion and registration
  • cognitive radar
  • passive coherent location systems
  • radio-holography
  • electromagnetic modelling of large scale problems

For the last 6 years Marina has established herself as one of the leaders in the emerging field of THz sensing for short-medium sensing, in particularly for automotive sensing for autonomous cars. As such she is the Terahertz Research Lead for the Microwave Integrated Systems Laboratory (MISL).

Marina is a Principal Investigator and lead coordinator of the consortium of three Universities (University of Birmingham, University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University) and JaguarLandRover on a major grant (£2.5 m) from EPSRC/Jaguar Land Rover on development of Pervasive low-TeraHz and Video Sensing for Car Autonomy and Driver Assistance (PATH CAD). This grant is part of the £11M Towards Autonomy Smart and Connected Control (TASCC) programme involving five consortia for research to develop fully autonomous cars.

Currently she is expanding her research, actively liaising with international leading academic group and industries such as

  • UK Universities of St Andrews, Glasgow, Edinburg, Manchester, UCL, Cranfield and overseas universities Universities of Rome (La Sapienza), Pisa and Warsaw Technical University.
  • DSTL, Leonardo ES, Thales (UK and France), MBDA (UK and France), QuinetiQ(UK), VivaTech (France), ELVA-1 (Sweden/ Russia) and Fraunhofer Institute (FHR Germany).

Marina has a large portfolio of other research grants (See Research) funded from diverse sources (EPSRC, industry, DSTL). 

She is also a chair (with Dr. Francesco Fioranelli, University of Glasgow) of EMSIG focus group MODEST (Modern Trend in Short/Medium Range Sensing). EMSIG is a recently formed UK radar and remote sensing network of academic, industrial and government organizations.

Marina Gashinova received the MMath from Saint-Petersburg State University, Russia, in 1991 and was awarded a PhD in radiophysics in 2003 from St-Petersburg Electrotechnical University, Russia.

She carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Birmingham initially on a 1 year NATO/RS honorary research fellowship position and then (2006-2011) as a research fellow in radar and signal processing in a renowned Microwave Integrated System Laboratory (MISL).

Since 2011, she holds an academic position and has been promoted to Professor in Pervasive Sensing in 2018. During time at the UoB Marina has established herself as a leader in several areas of research in radar and remote sensing with largest research project portfolios in:

  • Multi-feature 3D radar and electro-optical (EO) sensing for assisted and autonomous platforms with current main focus on provision of pervasive sensing for L4 and above autonomous cars, and, in general, unmanned airborne and maritime platforms
  • Defence radar and systems: target detection and classifications, active and passive guidance; intelligent perimeter protection, multistatic radar imaging

  • COgnitive REal time SENsing SystEm for autonomous vehicles- CORE SENSE (CoreSense)) – funded by Innovate UK(£3.4M total project, £1M UoB grant) – project consortium led by JLR, starts in July 2018
  • TASCC (£2.4M total budget): Pervasive low-TeraHz and Video Sensing for Car Autonomy and Driver Assistance (PATH CAD) (EP/N012372/1). 
  • THz imaging (£700K), Jaguar LandRover
  •  Surface Identification Software Development (£0.5M),
  •  Low Terahertz Radar for Pedestrian Identification and Tracking – JLR (£93K).

Last three projects are part of long-term industrial strategic partnership between MISL and JLR on  “Terahertz (THz) sensing”.

Marina is actively involved in the organization of IET/IEEE Radar conferences and International Radar Symposium and dissemination of research results through the most representative research events and conferences: TPC member of International Radar symposium (IRS) 2011-2017, IET RadarCon 2012, 2015, 2017, EuRAD and International Signal Processing Symposium, 2015-2016. She serves as session chair, organizes focused sessions and workshops and gives invited talks.
