Money Management

Look after your money

Once you’re here and ready to study, there’s not too much to do with your money other than manage it. With the right bank account and a few precautions, it should be easy to pay for things, while keeping your finances safe.

Open a UK bank account

If you’re studying with us for six months or more, you’ll need to open a UK bank account. You can start comparing accounts now, or when you arrive, so research a few banks and choose the one that suits you the best. Of course, there are many international banks in Birmingham, so if you have an account with one in your home country, it might be easier opening a UK account with them.

How to keep your money safe

Everyone knows to keep their money safe when they’re carrying it. But how do you protect your finances online? With so many scams around, it’s important to know how to spot one, so you can keep your money safe.

We tend to think financial scams only happen to other people or to older relatives. But there are lots of schemes targeting young people and students too. Some of them can look like a bargain, or promise you a lot of money. So when you study in the UK, here are some simple steps to keep your money safe:

Check the web address

Always check the URL in the address bar. If the address starts with ‘http’ rather than ‘https’, the website isn’t secure and you should think before you enter any personal or payment details.

Do your research

If the company isn’t a well-known brand, search for their name plus ‘reviews’. Trustpilot is a good place to check.

Check it’s official

Your bank will never ask for your full PIN or online password by phone or email. If you’re wondering if it’s a scam, call your bank using the number listed on your card and check.

Update your antivirus

This will help to prevent hackers finding ways into the details stored on your computer or device.

Install a password manager

Do you have the same password for all your online accounts? Scammers love this. But it’s so hard to remember multiple passwords. So use a password manager such as LastPass or 1Password to keep your bank details secure, while making it easier.
