How does online learning work?
An online course at the University of Birmingham allows you to study at your own pace and fit your studies around your other commitments. But how do you study online?
All of your learning materials for our online courses can be accessed in your own time, on the University of Birmingham's virtual learning environment (VLE) Canvas. This is accessible on desktop, laptop, and mobile devices.
Multimedia delivery
Utilising various media and channels, such as live streamed lectures with Q&A sessions and managed virtual communities, the University of Birmingham brings the interactive nature of campus based learning to the digital environment, all into one user friendly package.
Interact with tutors and students
The opportunity to interact with tutors and fellow students is one of the most important aspects of our online learning approach. You will be able to have regular contact and interactions with your tutors, including two-way conversations through various media including live-streamed lectures with chat functionality.
How many hours per week?
The number of contact hours per week depends on what course you are studying. Some lectures can be streamed online in real time, where you will have the opportunity to interact with your academic tutors and join a community of online learners like you! All lectures are recorded and saved for you to view on demand in your own time.
Assessments
Assessments and assessment types will vary from course to course, and from module to module. As an online student, all your module information and assessments can be found within the Canvas VLE, only a few clicks away, giving you the ability to take your assessments wherever you are.
