Sometimes it is easy to forget the impact you are having on these children’s lives. You become a role model to your students and can have such a positive impact on their lives without even realising, whether that be academically, socially or emotionally. Teaching is more than just teaching lessons.

Transcript

I began my Undergraduate Degree in 2017 at the University of Birmingham, and I was studying Education and Sociology.

Through my placements during that degree, I decided that teaching was something I was interested in, so I began my teaching course at the University of Birmingham and graduated in 2021.

So the highlights of the course for me were having the opportunity to have two different placements and alongside that also having weekly tutor group sessions, so I could get in touch with people that were teaching at other schools and having different experiences in different year groups.

We had two placements. So my first placement was in an EYFS setting. My second placement was a contrast in placement, so I was in a Year One setting and felt much more comfortable with those children, so Primary became my choice from there.

The course offered lots and lots of opportunities for CPD, which is Continued Professional Development. So that meant that in my spare time, during self-directed study, I was able to get extra qualifications along the side, which proved really helpful in times of going to my interviews and obtaining my position now.

I also had a tutor who helped me with my personal statement and did interview prep with me, which is really useful.

If someone was considering teacher training at the University of Birmingham, I would say absolutely do it. The course is fantastic. The team are so supportive. Our Lecturers are subject experts and the pastoral care is fantastic.

What excites me the most is the opportunity to be a positive role model for these children. I just think the School community in particular is such a lovely thing to be part of. Meeting so many different children every single day. So obviously, I've got my class in particular, but I like to think I know most of the children across the school, so it means that your day is never the same and you bump into new people every single day.

I think teaching can be an incredibly rewarding and sustainable career, and something that I see myself doing for long into the future.
