This course will run over 12 months in a full-time-mode. There is also scope to undertake the programme on a part-time basis for Home students.
Students will study one 20-credit core module focused on development theories, their historical and contemporary applications in economic, social, and political contexts as well as case studies. The remaining 100 credits are chosen from our list of International Development optional modules. Examinations will take place throughout the term as courseworks, written exams and/or presentations.

Teaching will utilise a range of learning methods, including short lectures, problem solving, role play and group work.
The programme is composed of one 20-credit core modules completed by 100 credits to choose across a range of optional International Development modules. To complete this and graduate with the 180 credits that will award you the MSc, you will have to undertake a 60-credit dissertation.

Choose 100 credits of optional modules. At least 40 credits must be selected from IDD optional modules. Up to 40 credits can be selected from College of Social Sciences or other University M level modules, subject to availability, timetabling constraints and the approval of the Programme Director and relevant module convenors.

To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.

If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.

Improve your knowledge of spoken and written English in preparation for studying at Birmingham with our pre-sessional English courses. If you have a conditional offer, you can take one of these courses as an alternative to retaking IELTS or other similar qualifications.
