Transcript

0:04
My name is Haripreeth Iyer.
0:05
I studied
0:06
MSc in Civil Engineering and Management from the University of Birmingham.
0:10
While I was working in my country, India,
0:13
I felt there is a gap in my knowledge that I wanted to fill.
0:16
And that was the reason of choosing a Masters that bridges the gap
0:19
between technicality and managerial skill set.
0:22
I'm currently working as a graduate highways designer
0:25
in a design consultancy firm, Ramboll, in Birmingham.
0:30
The business strategy and commitment of my organisation
0:33
is a partner for sustainable change.
0:35
So, I feel there is a constant emphasis of understanding the need for sustainable
0:40
design change, and my current role gives me
0:43
that opportunity to learn and perform as an engineer.
0:47
It's very important to know that we are living in a fast-paced environment, right
0:52
from information, right from things - everything is changing around us.
0:55
So the course, that University of Birmingham offered me,
0:59
the learning trajectory that they offered me,
1:01
it made me very resilient to those changes.
1:04
So, I got the aptitude of finding the answer to a question
1:08
- how to do a research, how to work between groups, how to work with diverse
1:13
people, how to try to come well-conducted
1:16
and at the same time, develop an emotional intelligence of understanding
1:20
what to speak, when to speak, and how to speak, and I think that was
1:24
a very interesting takeaway I had from my course.
1:27
It gave me a perfect balance of academically
1:32
develop myself and at the same time working on my transferable skills set.
1:36
I have established a foundational base, through the course,
1:39
that I studied at the University of Birmingham.
1:43
I can say that the kind of takeaways I had from my curriculum,
1:47
I get to apply them in my day-to-day job and learning.
1:50
My journey after being graduated from the University,
1:55
till I landed my first job was very enlightening, I'll say.
1:59
I had the opportunity to step back and objectively view myself as a person,
2:04
and also to absorb all the information that I had taken from the University,
2:08
and after that, I connected with Careers Network.
2:10
They helped me to tailor my CV.
2:12
They offered, how can I, tailor my answers?
2:15
And how can I prepare for an interview, for a role that I'm applying for.
2:20
My time at UoB was really fantastic.
2:22
I feel as an international student, UoB has a very inclusive environment.
2:26
Birmingham as a city first is very diverse, so I feel,
2:30
you are comfortable, to come across as yourself.
2:35
So that was a very important factor for my own sustenance when I came here.
2:39
So I was never obliged to change myself from who I was earlier.
2:44
And the University offers you the bridge where, you can go,
2:48
you can transform yourself through learning, understanding, communication,
2:52
the network that you develop over the time.
2:54
Everything counts and helps you as a person.
2:57
So, I will definitely recommend
2:59
University of Birmingham for an international student.
3:02
My advice to the current students, who are looking forward
3:05
to work in their industry
3:05
will be really understand your course and what it has to offer first.
3:09
And after that, never stop learning.
3:14
Try to know what your interest is.
3:15
Never change yourself.
3:16
Have your own individual personality.
3:18
Because that is what is different about you.
3:21
So, and at the same time, I will definitely say that,
3:25
“Per Ardua Ad Alta”, “through hard work,
3:29
you go to success, you reach the highest level of success”.
3:32
University of Birmingham definitely will make you feel this.
3:35
So never forget that.

We're living in a fast-paced environment - everything is changing around us. The course that the University of Birmingham offered me and the learning trajectory that they offered me - it made me very resilient to those changes. I got the aptitude of finding the answer to a question, how to research, how to work between groups, how to work with diverse people, how to beccome well-connected and at the same time, developing emotional intelligence. It gave me a perfect balance of academic and transferable skills.
