Course overview
The Applied Leadership and Management course enables early-career nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals to grow into confident, capable leaders. Aligned with the ambitions of We Are the NHS: People Plan (2020), this dynamic programme combines cutting-edge leadership theory, real-world healthcare policy, and hands-on application in clinical settings.
Designed for new and emerging clinical leaders, the course equips participants with practical skills in change management, quality improvement, team building, networking, and relationship management.
Our multi-disciplinary approach offers a vibrant learning environment, encouraging collaboration across professions and services. You'll engage with real-life case studies, explore how national policy translates into local action, and lead investigative work that drives meaningful improvement in care.
Course delivery
Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the use of evidence-based practice to underpin healthcare improvement.
- Critically reflect upon, and use, principles of leadership, team working and change to influence improvements in person-centred care.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate, report and rationalise to a peer and professional audience the outcomes from undertaking a quality improvement project.

Submission deadline for assessment: 20th May 2026
Assessment
A Service Improvement Proposal totalling 3000 words or a recorded audio PowerPoint presentation equivalent to 20 mins (max 15 slides).

You can choose to study this course as either a microcredential or a non-credit short course.

Please note the deadline for submitting an application:
- Applicants eligible for Home fees are to apply a minimum of 6 weeks before the module start date.
- Applicants eligible for Overseas fees are to apply a minimum of 3 months before the module start date.
Please note that once registered for the microcredential you cannot swap for the non-credit short course version.
Non-credit short course
The microcredential and the non-credit short course follow the same course structure, the difference between them both is with the non-credit short course you do not take the assessment at the end therefore you will not receive credits but will receive a certificate of completion, this certificate cannot be converted to credits.
Please note if you apply for the non-credit short course, you cannot swap to the microcredential version once registered.
Places on the non-credit short course are limited so please enquire before if spaces are available.
