Course overview
Social marketing is a framework for health promotion included in the World Health Organisation’s European Policy for Health and Well-being, Health 2020. Social marketing is also one of the key competencies for the public health workforce, according to the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER) and the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). The CPD module prompts strategic thinking skills and communications, which then will be used to creatively solve problems applied to public health.
Course delivery
The course is structured in three units, which could be covered in three or six respective weeks. Every unit included explanatory videos and readings that will prepare you to complete short “knowledge checks”. You will have the chance to fill in an outline plan for a social marketing campaign for feedback. There will also be a regularly timetabled discussion hour with the module tutor at the beginning and end.
The workshop will reinforce the learning of the online CPD; in addition, participants, in groups, will work to design a social marketing plan to address a genuine issue of their choice.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Define social marketing and explain its relevance to public health.
- Describe and apply the benchmark criteria for evaluating social marketing campaigns.
- Explain the steps of the social marketing planning process and their importance.
- Identify target audience segments and think of ways to gather actionable audience insights.
- Conduct competition analysis to enhance campaign effectiveness.
- Develop SMART goals, measurable objectives, and positioning statements for campaigns.
- Apply the marketing mix framework to design a campaign.
- Create a basic plan for campaign implementation, including budgeting, monitoring, and evaluation.
The deadline to apply is Sunday 9 February 2025 (00:00 GMT).
This course will be delivered online from the 9 February until the 22nd February and is integrated with an in-person workshop hosted at the University of Birmingham Dubai (UAE) on 16-20 February 2025.
