What made you choose the University of Birmingham?
I chose the University of Birmingham because it offered the perfect balance between academics, creativity, and city-life. The beautiful campus was charming and I loved that the University provides so many opportunities for career development and an incredible range of societies to join, allowing me to explore new hobbies I'd never had the chance to before coming to UoB. It felt like the perfect place for me to take a pause and really consider what I wanted out of my life both personally and professionally. Beyond that, Birmingham’s vibrant music and sports scene really aligned with my personal interests and the city has an allure that the others didn't.
Why did you choose to study your course?
I chose to study MSc Strategic Marketing and Consulting at the University of Birmingham because of the hands-on approach of the course, where you learn how to consult for companies. This practical element allows me to build a strong portfolio of marketing strategies and consulting advice for major brands like Glossier and Airbnb to showcase to future employers, which I find incredibly valuable. What also stood out to me is that Birmingham is one of the only universities offering a Masters specifically in consulting, giving me the chance to develop specialized skills that align directly with my long-term goal of working in brand strategy and marketing consulting.
What is your student experience like?
Student life is amazing at UoB! I have joined 17 societies and I am part of the BUCS Squash Team. The range of societies has allowed me to start my own radio show, gain real world experience in the 180 Degrees Consulting Society, and unwind with the Taylor Swift Society. I can make friends with a large range of students that share several interests of mine! Not to mention, societies can also go on your resume! I also landed a part-time job as a Student Content Creator which supports me financially and helps me develop creative social media skills!
Whether you join 17 societies or none, there is always something going on at UoB's campus. You can wander to the center of campus with your friends after lectures and find career fairs, art fairs, and free food occasionally! I love seeing what's going on in the center of campus, then heading to the Library for study sessions in between lectures.
Did you attend any events, online or on campus?
I followed UoB's social media channels closely for about a year before I made my decision to come to UoB. It was clear through their posts that the university offered such a wide range of things to get involved in, and several opportunities for career development, along with amazing professors.
What's your favourite thing about Birmingham so far?
My favourite thing about Birmingham so far is the city itself. I love how there’s always something to do like exploring the amazing shopping spots to trying out all the delicious restaurants around town. The Rep Theatre is one of my favourite places because it adds such a creative and cultural vibe to the city. I also love walking along the beautiful canals because they make Birmingham feel both lively and peaceful at the same time. There is always something going on for everyone like concerts, or the wonderful Christmas Market!
What advice would you give to current or prospective students to help them make the most of their time at Birmingham?
Get involved in as many things as possible - societies are not mandatory to attend every session, so join as many as you can and attend when you feel like it! It's always great to have the option to go. I also recommend making a bucket list for things around the city so you can take advantage of the time you have here. This can include restaurants, concerts, attractions like Cadbury World, or anything else!
As far as studies go, try your best to sit down at least once a week to review material so you don't fall behind. It can be tempting, especially at first, to prioritize friends and social activities over studying, but carving out a time to dedicate to your course material will really help!
