Why did you apply to study Medicine at Birmingham?

The University of Birmingham has a strong academic reputation alongside a focus on supportive, student-centred learning. I also liked the sense of community and the fact that it offers a balanced student experience with a demanding course. The campus environment and the city itself felt welcoming and diverse, and I could see myself growing both personally and professionally here. Overall, Birmingham felt like a place where I could challenge myself academically while still enjoying university life and developing the interests I want to carry forward into my future career.

What has been your highlight so far as a Medicine student?

One of my highlights has been finding a sense of community and balance alongside a demanding medical degree. Getting involved in societies, fitness, and creative activities has helped me meet people from different backgrounds and made my time here feel full and rewarding. I’ve also really enjoyed the moments where my learning starts to connect to real-life cases on placement, which has been both motivating and reassuring.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced?

The biggest challenge has been adjusting to the workload and pace of medicine while learning how to manage my time and energy effectively. There have been periods where it’s felt intense, especially at the start, but navigating that has helped me become more organised, resilient, and self-aware. Over time, I’ve learned how important it is to ask for support, prioritise wellbeing, and create routines that work for me.

What has your overall experience as a student been like so far?

My overall experience has been both challenging and really enjoyable. Medicine has pushed me academically, but it’s also been exciting and motivating to learn in an environment that’s fast-paced and full of opportunities. I’ve appreciated the variety that comes with university life here, from teaching and placements to societies, sport, and social activities, which has helped my experience feel well-rounded. Overall, it’s been a valuable and positive experience that’s helped shape both my academic journey and personal development.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying Medicine?

I’d say go into the course with an open mind. Medicine can feel intense at first, so it’s important to stay organised, build routines early, and not compare yourself too much to others. Try to get involved in things outside of your course as well, whether that’s sport, societies, or creative hobbies because having balance really helps. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or reach out for support if you’re struggling, and make use of the resources available. Most importantly, remember why you chose the course in the first place and enjoy the process of learning and growing along the way.
