How did you know that the University of Birmingham was the right choice for you?
For me, it was after visiting an open day and seeing the beautiful campus and outstanding facilities that the University has to offer. I loved the University’s on-campus train station, making it easy to get to the city centre in 7 minutes, while still having a campus that feels slightly set apart and relaxed. Everyone I met, both students and staff, was friendly and welcoming and the positive atmosphere across both the University and the City made the decision feel easy and exciting.
Why did you choose to study your course?
I chose to study Business Management with Marketing because the course covers a wide range of subjects, giving flexibility to explore many different career paths. I have really enjoyed the marketing elements, group projects and opportunities to work with local charities in Birmingham. I also liked that assessments are split between coursework and exams, rather than being exam heavy. Having access to such a large business school with dedicated academic and careers support was reassuring and made the course feel very supportive.
What is student life like for you?
Student life has been really fun and rewarding with loads to get involved in!
I work part-time as a Business School Ambassador, where I enjoy speaking to prospective students and sharing my experiences. I am also an Outreach Ambassador, visiting schools across Birmingham discussing post-16 pathways and university.
Alongside work, I am very involved in music and events. I am a pianist in the Gospel Choir, I DJ and I co-run a student events brand, which has been an amazing way to meet people and gain hands-on experiences. I am a member of the African Caribbean Society and The Caribbean Union, both of which host many great socials. Through societies and events alone, I have met some of my closest friends.
On campus there’s a great balance between academic and social life, with things such as food trucks, our monthly Artisan market popup and even a Ferris Wheel last Christmas!
What's your favourite memory of university life so far?
One of my favourite memories so far was hosting a major student event last November in partnership with the Caribbean Union. The club night sold out, with over 350 students attending. I DJ’d for part of the night alongside other student DJs, and it was amazing to see so many people enjoying something I helped create with other students. The experiences helped me build new friendships, confidence and opportunities for others, and showed me what studying at the University of Birmingham has made possible.
What advice would you give to current or prospective students?
My advice would be to get involved and say yes to opportunities, even if they feel slightly out of your comfort zone! Joining societies, attending events when you can, and making use of university resources can make a huge difference. For me, support within the Business School has been valuable, especially from tutors and the Careers Network, who help with your CVs, placement applications and developing new skills. Making the most of this support really helps you make the most of your time at Birmingham.
