Learning, growing, and giving back: My Birmingham experience

Studying abroad is never an easy journey, especially for those of us who have spent most of our lives growing up in our home country. That is why choosing the right university and city is such an important decision, it is where we place our hopes for personal and professional growth.

For me, the biggest difference between my undergraduate and postgraduate studies has been the learning environment. At the University of Birmingham, where I am currently pursuing my master’s degree, I have experienced a truly diverse and multicultural community. I study alongside students from all over the world, learn from highly knowledgeable academics, and engage with interactive teaching methods that help connect theory with real-world applications.

One thing I particularly appreciate is how supportive the lecturers are. They genuinely listen to students’ opinions and regularly organise events, workshops, and activities that help us develop both academically and professionally. These experiences have reassured me that it was the right choice for my postgraduate journey.

Beyond my studies, I work as a Student Ambassador and serve as a Student Representative for my programme. These roles have been incredibly rewarding. I enjoy sharing my experiences with prospective students, introducing them to both my course and the university, and acting as a bridge between students and academic staff. It is fulfilling to contribute to improving the student experience for everyone.

Academically, attending classes regularly, taking detailed notes, and actively asking questions have helped me succeed in assignments and exams. More importantly, these habits have allowed me to better understand what lecturers expect and gain deeper insights into the subjects I study.

My master’s degree is helping me move closer to my career goals, and studying at a well-respected university like Birmingham has opened many doors. The university provides a wide range of career workshops and development programmes that allow students to build valuable employability skills at no extra cost.

One thing that surprised me was how much critical writing is expected at postgraduate level. At first, developing a critical mindset and expressing it in academic writing was challenging. However, through classroom discussions, feedback, and practice, I gradually learned how to think more critically and communicate my ideas effectively. Looking back, this has become one of the achievements I am most proud of.

For me, stepping outside my comfort zone and choosing to study at the University of Birmingham has been one of the best decisions I have ever made - a milestone filled with unforgettable memories that I will always cherish.
