From exploring campus life, a diverse community, and personal growth that shaped my study abroad experience, these are why I loved the University of Birmingham.

When I decided to spend my study abroad year at the University of Birmingham, I knew I was choosing a university that aligns with my future goals. Having already studied at the University of Birmingham Dubai, I had heard a lot about the UK campus, but I was still curious about what the experience would actually be like.
One of the first things that stood out to me was the campus itself. Seeing the Edgbaston campus in person for the first time was a completely different experience from seeing it online. Whether it was walking past Old Joe, spending time around the Green Heart, or finding my favourite study spots in the library, the campus quickly became more than just a place where I attended lectures. There was always something happening, from students catching up between classes to events taking place throughout the week, which created a real sense of community.
What I also appreciated was the balance between academics and student life. The University of Birmingham offers so much more than lectures and assignments. Throughout my time here, I have been exposed to opportunities that help students develop beyond the classroom, whether through events, guest speakers, careers support, societies, or simply meeting people with different perspectives and experiences. It creates an environment where you feel encouraged to learn not only from your course but also from everything happening around you.
As an international student, one of the things that made the biggest difference was the university's diverse community. Coming from Dubai, I was already used to being surrounded by people from different cultures and backgrounds, and Birmingham offered a similar feeling. It didn't take long before I found myself meeting students from all over the world. That diversity creates an incredibly welcoming atmosphere because everyone brings their own experiences and stories. It makes it easier to build friendships, learn from others, and feel part of something much bigger.
Beyond the university, Birmingham itself played a huge role in shaping my experience. Before arriving, I didn't know much about the city beyond its reputation as the UK's second largest city. What I discovered was a city that offers something for everyone. From cafes and restaurants to cultural events, shopping, and green spaces, there is always something to explore. What I particularly enjoyed was how student friendly the city feels. It's large enough to be exciting and full of opportunities, but not so overwhelming that it becomes difficult to navigate or settle into.
Perhaps the biggest reason I would choose Birmingham again is the personal growth that comes with the experience. Moving from Dubai to Birmingham pushed me outside my comfort zone in ways I hadn't expected. It taught me independence, adaptability, and confidence. There were moments when I missed home, moments when things felt unfamiliar, and moments when I had to figure things out for myself. But those experiences ended up being some of the most valuable lessons I gained during my time here.
Looking back, I realise that choosing Birmingham was about much more than spending a year abroad. It was about becoming part of a global university community, experiencing life in one of the UK's most vibrant cities, and growing both academically and personally. The combination of a beautiful campus, a diverse student community, exciting opportunities, and a welcoming city is what makes the University of Birmingham such a special place to study.
