From classroom to ward: My first Nursing placement

Preparing for my first nursing placement was one of the most exciting yet nerve-wracking parts of starting my nursing journey. It felt like everything I had learned in lectures was about to become real, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.

To help myself feel more prepared, I started by looking into the practical details. I checked how far my placement was from my accommodation and planned my travel routes in advance, just to avoid any added stress on early shifts. I also made time to visit the ward before my start date, which honestly made a huge difference. It helped the environment feel more familiar and less intimidating.

Speaking to current student nurses was also really helpful. Hearing about their daily routines, from handovers to observations and breaks, gave me a clearer idea of what a typical shift actually looks like. It made everything feel more achievable.

I also made sure I understood the university’s uniform policy properly so I could present myself professionally from day one. Alongside that, I revised some basic medications and their effects, which helped me feel more confident when thinking about patient care.

One of the biggest things I focused on was mentally preparing myself for what nursing really involves. I had to remind myself that I would be supporting people with personal care, often strangers at vulnerable moments, and that empathy would be just as important as any clinical skill. I also thought about how I would need to multitask, communicate clearly, and stay calm in busy situations.

Looking back, preparing in this way helped ease my anxiety and made me feel more ready to learn. For me, choosing a place like the University of Birmingham feels reassuring, because it’s a journey where students are guided and supported as they grow into confident nurses.
