Sport and Fitness building

Hi! I’m Louise and I am studying Music at UoB. As amazing as my course is, it is always fun engaging in extra-curricular activities and collaborating with people outside my course.

University Music

As an avid music maker, I can’t help but get involved with as many music ensembles as I can! University Music at UoB consists of over 40 ensembles open to all students. I am currently in Saxophone Choir, Clarinet Choir, Flute Choir and Wind Band. In the ensembles I am a part of, I have played and conducted many fun and well known pieces. This ranges from Pirates of the Caribbean, to Monsters, Inc. I have found the atmosphere so welcoming throughout my degree so far and joining these has allowed me to make friends with people who have similar interests to me. We have a wide range of concerts termly, which anyone can attend (usually for only £5 per ticket!). Whether you play an instrument, sing, or are interested in watching live concerts here on campus, the University of Birmingham has many opportunities for this.

Sporting activities

When coming to university, I found it important that I went somewhere with an engaging sports programme. I have a gym membership at the spacious gym on campus, which has acted as a nice escape to help manage stress and anxiety, along with another activity to do with my friends. At UoB, I am a member of the Women’s Basketball Club. Here, I have played competitively for the 2nd team in my first and second year, before moving to the development team in my final year to focus on my studies. Many sports teams offer a wide range of options for what level you want to play at. The atmosphere is amazing, with everyone playing a sport we love.

Many sports have their own unique event throughout the year, with UoB Basketball’s big event “Rebellion” occurring on the 8th of March. Both the men’s 1st and women’s 1st team played on Saturday, with the women’s team having a tough, close game against Women’s Coventry and the men’s team winning against Oxford Brookes. Rory the lion mascot made an appearance, along with the incredible UoB cheer squad, putting on a brilliant half time performance. The sports events at the University of Birmingham are not one to miss! These events provide action-packed content and a place to socialise with your friends and support sports here at UoB!
