My favourite things to do in Birmingham city centre

Audrey shares her top five places to visit in the heart of the UK's vibrant second city.

My decision to come to the University of Birmingham was heavily influenced by the culture of the city in Birmingham itself. Having visited a few times prior to committing to becoming a student, I could tell Birmingham had a heartbeat not many other cities could compare to. There are so many different backgrounds, artists, cuisines, events, and opportunities here. Below are just some of my favourites!

Birmingham Christmas Market

Every winter, Birmingham city centre lights up with ferris wheels, a Christmas tree, and loads of outdoor shops that sell chocolate covered apples, candied nuts, bratwursts, and anything else you can imagine. I love strolling through this market every Christmas and feeling the holiday cheer. It’s a great place to bring your friends or family for a lovely night in town.

Library of Birmingham

The Library sits on broad street which is one of the most famous streets in Brum. Whether you decide to go into the Library for studies, or sit outside, you can always find something going on here. During the winter, an ice skating rink is right outside the main entrance!

O2 Academy

Catch an up and coming artist at this arena for fair prices and a good time! Birmingham has a great music scene, and this venue is just a short bus ride away from campus.

Walk around Gas Street Basin

The canals in Brum are super beautiful and taking a stroll next to the water provides the perfect break from studying. Near Gas Street Basin is the famous Black Sabbath bench, several restaurants and pubs, and the library. You will not be bored here!

Birmingham Hippodrome/REP Theatre

Catch the perfect show with your friends at one of these amazing venues, and feel like you are transported to Hollywood. These venues showcase some of the UK’s top talent! It’s always nice to go out every once in awhile, dress up, and treat yourself to some great art!

I hope you thoroughly enjoy Birmingham for what it is- a wonderful mix of art, sports, food, and people.
