When applying for university, I felt out of my depth and anxious as it is so important to choose the right place for you. No one in my family or around me had been to university and I didn’t even know that it was option for me until I achieved my grades in my GCSE’s. All I knew was that I loved English Literature!

I decided to study A-Levels at college, taking History, English Literature and Drama and Theatre. They linked together well, improving my essay-writing skills, and also helping to expand my knowledge of historical context and playwrights. After achieving AAB in my A-Levels, I took a gap year to get my drivers license, work and save money as well as having the time to research the right university for me.

I attended open days, utilised online tools such as accommodation tours, social media sites e.g. day in the life of students, and also experiencing the social life of the cities. After attending the University of Birmingham’s open day, I knew it was the right university for me. I spoke to module leaders, learning about their links with the Royal Shakespeare Company and exploring the campus and the city itself. I firmed the university as my first choice. Due to already having my grades, I didn’t need to wait until Results day and once my offer came through, I started planning my next steps.

I applied for accommodation, filling out the forms and researching the accommodation for me. I also used UniBuddy and other social media sites to meet other people studying the same degree, which helped me connect with others before starting. The University’s videos also gave me all the information I needed to feel ready for moving in day. I couldn’t be happier with my decision and my best advice is to utilise student voice and their experiences at university for insight into what would suit you!
