Opportunities for employment as a student

While studying your degree, it is very beneficial to gain work experience to contribute to your employability, as well as helping you to fund yourself.

Students walking across campus

The University has so many opportunities to gain experience in any field, while gaining some extra money on the side.

On campus, I am a student ambassador, which develops my skills in presenting, working with students, staff and young people, as well as immersing myself with campus life, which benefits my experience as a student. The role is extremely flexible, reliable and accessible, meaning I can stay on campus while working, saving travel fares and time. I certainly wouldn’t know as much about the campus and all its hidden gems if I didn’t work in that role! Working open days, offer holder days and school visits also amplifies my communication, time-management and improvisation skills.

Alongside this role, I am also a content creator, which has massively developed my interest and skills in marketing, contributing to my future career path. Working with trends on social media, making blogs (like this one!) and reels, as well as working with student recruitment, gives me first-hand experience with the marketing world, as well as being a fun and flexible job! Both roles are developing my skills for future employment, while earning money on the side.

In addition to this, the University has so many fantastic opportunities for internships, which is an important step for future employment. Through their B-experienced programme, I had a four-month internship with SparkActive, an organisation focusing on promoting and developing girls football and sport, working closely with the FA and other sport organisations in and around Birmingham. This internship helped me gain insight into marketing and how to run a business, combined with my favourite hobby-football. The B-experienced programme is an incredible way for students to easily find internships that will support their future career plans, as well as funding their time, travel and effort put into the internship.

Through the University’s connections, as the main university for employability, I have been able to obtain an internship with Millfield school in the summer, working as an assistant coordinator for operations at their summer school. I am extremely grateful and excited about this opportunity and I can’t wait to get started.

Furthermore, starting in September, I will be working as part of the Aston Webb reception on campus, which is a fantastic opportunity to further my experience in employment, helping to prepare for life after university. There are so many fantastic, diverse, fun and challenging opportunities for part-time work and internships at the University!
