Discover how living in Selly Oak shapes the student experience from vibrant social life and convenience to friendships, growth, and unforgettable memories.

Living in Selly Oak has significantly shaped my university journey. When I first moved here, I saw it simply as a convenient place to stay close to campus. Over time, though, it became much more than that. It transformed into a vibrant place filled with character, chaos, comfort, and unforgettable memories that I will cherish after I graduate.
One of the things I’ve always loved about Selly Oak is its energy. It's a student hub, and that comes with a kind of liveliness you don’t really find elsewhere. Whether it’s people heading to lectures, grabbing coffee between seminars, or gathering for a night out, there’s always something going on. Even just walking down the street feels social as you are constantly bumping into familiar faces, which gives the whole place a strong sense of community.
Selly Oak isn’t perfect, but that’s kind of what makes it feel so real. The houses are comfortable in their own way and quickly start to feel like home. There’s something about student housing that everyone just understands, you all are in the same situation, figuring things out as you go. The little things, like mismatched furniture or busy kitchens, don’t really matter. If anything, they end up being part of the experience. They're the spaces where you sit and talk for hours, throw together random meals, and get through stressful deadlines with the people around you.
Another reason I’ve loved living here is how convenient everything is. Life just feels easier in Selly Oak, and that makes it so much easier to actually enjoy your time at university. Whether it’s heading to the Soak to chill with friends, ending up at the Goose on a random evening, or just going out to grab food, there’s always something happening. The best part is that nothing really needs planning as it all comes together at the last minute, and those end up being the nights you remember the most.
Everything you need is also within walking distance, which makes a huge difference. From restaurants and grocery shops to quick takeaways after a long day, it’s all right there. Even getting to campus takes less than fifteen minutes, which just takes away a lot of stress. That kind of accessibility gives you more time and energy to focus on what actually matters.
But more than anything, it’s the social aspect that makes Selly Oak special. It’s a place where friendships grow naturally. Living so close to other students means plans are often spontaneous. Looking back, I think what I’ll miss most is the atmosphere. There’s something comforting about being surrounded by people at the same stage of life, all navigating similar challenges because you’re all in the same boat, figuring things out together, and that shared experience creates strong bonds. Selly Oak isn’t just somewhere you stay, it’s somewhere you grow.
In the end, choosing Selly Oak isn’t about finding somewhere perfect. It’s about choosing a place that gives you the full university experience, independence, friendships, and moments you don’t fully appreciate until later. And for me, that’s exactly why it’s been worth it.
