Old Joe clock tower at the University of Birmingham.

It’s foundation year results day, and I’m holding my breath as I check my grades. Fast-forward past the mini freakout (okay, major freakout) because I will – I’m going to study Computer Science at the University of Birmingham!

Why was I so keen on Birmingham? Well, let me break it down for you.

The prestige is real

First, University of Birmingham is part of the Russell Group, which means it’s one of the most reputable institutions in UK higher education. It stands out for its top-tier teaching and commitment to excellence.

Facilities that impress

The campus is vast and absolutely beautiful regardless of the season, but spring is when it truly shines. Picture blooming flowers, green spaces, and iconic magnificent buildings that have been standing for decades, holding years of history. We even have our own little museum on campus, which is ideal for a quiet afternoon of exploration. It’s almost reminiscent of a mini city!

The facilities don’t disappoint either. The Computer Science building is a techie’s dream, and the gym? World-class. It accommodates over 10+ sports, from swimming to squash, and has everything you need to keep active, whether you’re a casual gym-goer or a serious athlete. And let’s not forget the food spots. Shoutout to the rice bowls from Cantina that fuel my day.

A society for literally everything

Into gaming? Got it. Love debating? Sorted. Want to learn how to salsa? Absolutely. With 300+ societies, there’s truly something for everyone. I joined the North African Society in my first year, found my people within weeks, and now, in my second year, I’m part of the committee to make it a worthwhile experience for freshers whose shoes I was in just last year. Even if you’re not sure where to start, there are quirky options like Cheese Soc or Bad Film Soc. Plus, there are plenty of student-led initiatives, whether they’re academic-focused or completely outside the box.

Support that’s actually helpful

Uni life can be overwhelming, but UOB has your back. From personal tutors to teaching assistants (TAs), there’s always someone to help when you’re stuck or overwhelmed with uni life. And the careers team? Absolute lifesavers when it comes to internships and CV advice to give an extra boost to your applications.

The vibe

What really sold me though was the vibe. It’s diverse, it’s vibrant, and it’s welcoming. Whether you’re at a society event, exploring the gorgeous campus, or geeking out with classmates, there’s always this energy that makes you feel like you belong. It’s a diverse campus which makes international students -like myself- feel included

So, if you’re wondering whether Birmingham is the place for you, just know that it’s more than a university – it’s a whole experience. And trust me, it’s one worth having.
