Growing up, I was always curious about our planet and how it worked. That curiosity could have led me in many directions, as the earth is incredibly complex, but it eventually pushed me toward studying Geology for my undergraduate degree. When I was looking for universities, the University of Birmingham stood out as a prestigious institution with excellent facilities for Earth and Environmental Sciences, and even its own geology museum. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the qualifications at the time, so I studied elsewhere.
As I entered my final year, I began thinking seriously about career paths. My curiosity had been fed, but I wasn’t sure how to channel my new knowledge into a career. Geology has so many branches, but I found myself particularly drawn to Petroleum Geology and Hydrogeology.
After graduating, I spent three years working in the North Sea as a Mud Logger. It was a great experience, but I knew I wanted to transition into a more sustainable career path. I remembered how much I had enjoyed Hydrogeology and realised that pursuing a postgraduate degree would be the best way to prepare for that shift.
During my research, everything pointed me back to the University of Birmingham. The MSc Hydrogeology course at Birmingham is the first and longest-running in the country, with strong industry involvement that keeps the course aligned with current standards. That was exactly what I needed, a hydrogeology degree that would make me truly industry-ready. It also meant I had another chance to study at my dream university, so I didn’t hesitate to apply.
Now that I’m here, I know I made the right decision. My professors are incredibly supportive, whether it’s with academics, career progression, or even mental wellbeing, they are always there to help. The campus is excellent, and having our own dedicated MSc room for lectures and study has been very convenient. I love exploring the various study spaces when I need a change of scenery, and have also loved being in the city. Living in Birmingham has been great so far, and the diversity makes me feel at home as an international student. I’m genuinely happy with my choice, and I’m excited for the rest of my Birmingham journey.
