I have been a student ambassador for almost a year now and it’s true what they say… time flies by fast when you’re having fun. Becoming a student ambassador has massively shaped my first year at university and helped me in more ways that one.
The most noticeable way that this role has helped me, is socially. Over the past year, I have built so many friendships with other student ambassadors that I’ve met. These friends are a mixture of other year groups and subjects so I doubt that I would have met them, had I not become a student ambassador. We’ve had so much fun working together and I know these friendships won’t disappear overnight so I’m extremely grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to meet them.
Another big reason why I love being a student ambassador is working with young people and making an impact on their education. From leading a 60-minute campus tour to helping run a week-long summer school, student ambassadors get the chance to guide and inspire young people left, right and centre. Young people really value hearing about your own experiences and advice so it’s a very rewarding part of the job.
You also get to explore campus more, meet lecturers from other subject areas and take part in engaging work. It’s by no means a boring job! As a business student, there are parts of the campus that I will probably never step into; my student ambassador role has enabled me to visit these buildings- some of which are very cool! I’ve also listened to lectures about ground-breaking research in palaeontology, practiced how to take someone’s blood pressure in the Medical School and seen students construct futuristic cities for a geography session. Becoming a student ambassador creates so many interesting opportunities for you.
Lastly, the student ambassador role is a flexible, well-paid part-time job that fits perfectly into your timetable and helps financially. There’s a range of shifts to select depending on how much free-time you have that week. During term-time you can only work a maximum of 15 hours per week (this may vary for international students), allowing you to balance studying, socialising and working. I would 100% recommend becoming a student ambassador and I have no doubts that you will love it as much as I do.
