An offer holder day is DEFINETLY something you need to attend before coming to uni. A website and photos online can only do so much, but standing in the middle of campus on a random day of the week in semester time is the best way of knowing whether the vibe of campus is right for you. For me the second I got to campus, I noticed how the students were interacting with each other, laughing on the benches outside the library, sitting in groups chatting and smiling. It sounds like a small detail, but it told me so much about the culture of the place and gave me a prospect and snippet into what my experience would look like one day.
I sat in on a talk with one of the lecturers from my department and I learnt so much about my course in that time than what I had seen online. They talked about specific modules, assessment work and where to find academic support. I even had the opportunity to ask a question which had been on my mind for a while and I’m so glad I did. It also made me less intimidated to see how nice and supportive the lecturers are as university is a big step up from school and college, so this really eased my mind. It also allowed me to meet other students coming to UoB and I kept in contact with them over the summer, and we even met up to go to lectures when we joined. This automatically made coming to uni less scary as I had already solidified some friendships.
Come to the day with a list of questions prepared, so you make the most of the day. Explore on your own around campus, go sit in one of the several coffee shops the campus has to see if you can picture yourself there. It’s also a great chance to have a quick look around where you’re going to live next year so you can gain a sense of familiarity of what the day-to-day life of UoB will hold for you.
The offer holder confirmed for me that UoB was the right choice of uni. There’s only so much you can learn online, until you experience it in the flesh you can never know just how great UoB life is.
