Offer holder days present a great opportunity for you to see what a typical ‘day in the life’ is like for a student on your prospective course. This is something that can play a huge role in your decision-making process of choosing which university you would like to go to.
Even if you have already attended an open day, an offer holder visit day is a more tailored experience, with chances to meet current students from your subject area. You will also have the chance to attend mock lectures and to ask plenty of questions.
A lecturer from your subject area will provide you with an overview of the course you are looking to study at the university. This will help you to familiarise yourself with things like contact hours and the modules that your course offers.
After this, you will get the chance to hear from current students about their personal experience whilst studying at the university. Like me, you will probably have lots of questions and this is a perfect chance to gain valuable insight into your course and general university life to help you make an informed decision.
Attending a mock lecture was one of the best parts of the day for me. The lecturer introduced the content of their module (game theory) and then dove deeper, giving a real sense of what teaching at a university level is like. It finished with the opportunity to play a game to demonstrate the points the lecturer had made, with prizes for the winners. Don’t worry if you don’t understand it all, that’s what learning at university is for!
Throughout the day there will be breaks in which you have the chance to talk one-on-one with the current students and staff. Although this may seem intimidating, everyone you meet is so friendly and this helped me to relax. I spoke to a lecturer about my A-levels and the career prospects of the course, and they helped me to realise the potential that studying my course here has.
There are refreshments available, and the general atmosphere is very welcoming, making you feel as if you belong and already are a student at the university. This helped me to come out of my shell and meet my potential future course mates, one of which I am still best friends with today!
An offer-holder visit day is your chance to boost your confidence about university life and will help you to decide on where you would like to spend your next few years.
