High achievers offer flexibility information

At Birmingham, our admissions approach is designed to recognise both academic achievement and the wider experiences that support student success.
For 2026 and 2027 entry, we are broadening the range of achievements that may be considered as part of our high achievers offer flexibility.
What’s changing?
Students may now be eligible for a one grade reduction in their offer where they demonstrate one of the following:
- EPQ: Grade B or above (previously grade A)
- Core Maths: Grade B or above (previously grade A)
- Sport: Participation at county level or above in any sport, alongside our existing Elite Dual Career Athlete scheme
- Music performance: Grade 8 or above in an eligible Level 3 music performance qualification (e.g. ABRSM, Rockschool, Trinity College London). Music theory qualifications are not included.
Key conditions
- A maximum of one grade reduction can be applied
- Reductions will not apply to subjects specifically required within the offer
- Certain programmes are excluded, including Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and related programmes, alongside courses with fixed subject requirements
How we apply these changes
For current offer-holders (2026 entry), these enhancements will be considered during Confirmation. Existing offers will not normally be formally amended in advance, but flexibility may be applied where students meet the relevant criteria.
From 2027 entry onwards, these changes will be fully embedded within our admissions policy and applied during the offer-making process.
What students need to do
In most cases, no additional action will be required. However:
- Music performance qualifications should be included in the UCAS application, either as qualifications already achieved or currently being studied.
- Undergraduate offer-holders who wish to notify us of eligible sport participation or music achievements can complete our online form
Our approach
These changes reflect our commitment to a fair and inclusive admissions process that recognises the broad range of experiences and achievements which help students succeed at university. Admissions staff will continue to apply these arrangements consistently and fairly in line with published admissions guidance.
Hear from our Director of Admissions
At Birmingham, we are committed to ensuring that our admissions processes recognise the full range of qualities that enable students to succeed. Academic achievement remains central, but we also value the independence, motivation, teamwork and resilience demonstrated through activities such as extended study, sport and music. These enhancements are designed to reflect that broader view of achievement, while maintaining clarity and fairness in how offers are applied.
