UBRacing Spring 2017
UBRacing has been working hard in preparation for main build season, with carbon fibre manufacture taking place at EPM Technologies well underway. Our focus thus far has been on our monocoque. Unlike most other teams, our monocoque is manufactured using a folding technique as opposed to being moulded. This involves laying up carbon fibre onto flat glass panels and curing them in several sections. These sections are then bonded together with an aluminium honeycomb core and folded into the final monocoque shape.
We have also been lucky enough to receive granting from the Alumni Impact Fund to enable us to start our new method of manufacturing our aerodynamics package. This method will give us significantly lighter wing elements, whilst maintaining an excellent finish on the surface of the cured carbon, so we thank the Fund and our generous alumni for their support.
We recently had the pleasure of taking 007 (aka UBR19) out on its last run, and to its final showcase event. During the last testing run at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground we were able to collect valuable data that will aid the team for validation of this year’s designs. 007’s last outing as a complete car was to Stowe School, where the team spoke to students about engineering, university and Formula Student. The day was very well received by both teachers and students, and we were also able to get some great pictures of the car on the School’s scenic grounds.
Along with working towards competition in June, we are heading towards the EPS Societies’ Awards and want to maintain our reputation. We have an amazing track record in Role Model of the Year and have grown even more this year as a team. Please nominate us!
Most importantly UBRacing turn 20 this year and we’ll be celebrating with a BBQ and gridwalk on Saturday 17 June. All current, former and prospective members, along with motorsport enthusiasts, are invited to join us for our birthday celebrations and more information is available at www.birmingham.ac.uk/UBRacing20. We look forward to seeing you there!
