Although it has been a tough and challenging year, BEaMS have worked very hard over the summer holidays to plan and organised engaging virtual events to help new students settle in at the University.
We welcomed new members with an event for new students joining the University and the society: ‘Freshers with BEaMS’ provided a platform for black and minority ethnic students to meet their peers and get to know us as a society. We also took part in the EPS Virtual Societies Fair to invite more people to join the society.
This was then followed by a brilliant collaboration with the African and Caribbean Society, Black & Ethnic Minorities’ Association and Caribbean Union to host a University-wide Black History Month event. The event featured guest speakers from industry, alumni and guest performances. It was really well attended and received good feedback. It was also sponsored by the Guild of Students who we are very grateful to for their support.
To end the year, BEaMS worked with the School of Mathematics to organise a social games night. Together we invited students and staffs provided a platform to improve the engagement of minority students in the School.
As the New Year and second term approaches, we hope to organise more career related workshops. Plans have already began for our second Equal In STEM event in collaboration with WISE and oSTEM, and we can’t wait to share more about this soon.
