UBRacing has been working hard to put everything in place ready for our main build season, with our monocoque manufacture nearing completion already. So far our main focus has been on manufacturing the monocoque as this is the largest and arguably most important part of the car, with thanks to our partner EPM Composites Ltd for their support and facilities. Unlike most other teams, our monocoque is manufactured using a folding technique as opposed to being moulded. This involves laying up carbon fibre onto flat glass panels and curing them in several sections. These sections are then bonded together with an aluminium honeycomb core and folded into the final monocoque shape.

This year the team will be competing again Formula Student UK at Silverstone in July and then going on to compete at Formula Student Germany at Hockenheim in August. This is the first time since 2012 that we will be at the German competition and the first time since 2016 that we have competed at two competitions! The team were very fortunate to receive funding from the Hands Up Alumni Fund to allow us to attend the competition in Germany and are only one of two UK teams competing there. Thank you for your support. After gaining 3 trophies at least year’s competition and placing 2nd overall, we’ve got a big act to follow but are feeling pretty confident.

We recently had the pleasure of taking last year’s car, UBR20 out on its last test session before removing components to be carried forward onto the new car. We also used this as an opportunity to allow the core team members to have a drive, which everybody fully enjoyed and luckily no-one broke anything!

During the last outing to Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground we were able to collect valuable data, as well as doing some dynamic testing with our new carbon fibre wheel which is now being manufactured ready to be on the car at competition.

As well as working towards our competitions, we are also heading to the EPS Societies’ Awards and after the successes of UBR20 we are hoping to add to our trophy collection. Please nominate us!

Make sure to keep up to date with the ins and outs of the team by following us on our Facebook, Twitter  and Instagram.

Wish us luck for the competitions and watch this space!
