Women in Finance is an all-inclusive society aiming to help anyone and everyone with an interest for all things finance related! Our main aim is to help support members wishing to pursue a career in finance or maybe to even to ignite a new passion in someone that hadn’t already considered the field. We welcome ALL STUDENTS, no matter your degree background or gender, everybody deserves to be part of diversity and inclusion. We are looking to break the myths that EPS students can’t go to finance, cause you sure can!

Our goal is to ‘Empower You Towards Your Future Career’ by providing women with support and guidance to help them realise their full potential in pursuing a career in finance and professional services.

Over the last year we’ve found there are a lot of students within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences interested in finance who weren’t aware of us or our events, so didn’t necessarily know how we can help them. We are trying to break the myth that STEM students can’t join the financial or professional services industry! Your wide range of knowledge can contribute greatly to delivering best solutions to businesses worldwide.

We can’t wait for another busy term filled with more events. You can expect events such as:

  • EY office visit
  • Insight to Private Banking with Rothschild & Co.
  • How to: Interviews! with Bright Network
  • Afternoon Tea with Accenture

We kicked off the winter term with our famous masterclass with applications guru, Gwyn Day. Over 40 people joined us to get his expert advice with some lucky members even getting the chance to have a one on one meeting with him to fine tune their CVs and make sure their internship applications are the very best they can be. Everyone had an informative and entertaining evening getting insider knowledge and tips with the added perk of free pizza afterwards!

Later in the term we were joined by our fantastic sponsors, EY and Accenture who each helped us put on events about all things consultancy and financial services. We had speakers from both companies delivering interesting presentations on their insights into working in the financial sector, as well as providing invaluable application tips and offering members the opportunity to network with some business experts. Whether it’s a case study workshop with over 70 people or an informal networking session with more food, we sure had good fun. We also partnered with the Women in Science and Engineering Society (WISE) on the Accenture event!

We then invited in a top fund manager at a Birmingham based financial services company, Wesleyan. He gave us all the information necessary to know whether an investment banking career is the one for you. Thanks to him we gained a real understanding of what day to day life is like for someone working in this sector, as well as advising us on what it takes to be successful in the industry. Like most of our events, there was also the chance to network afterwards and make those all-important connections that you never know when you might need!

Our final event of the decade came in the form of a brilliant mock-assessment centre run by car rental super giants, Enterprise! Julia Speed and fellow UoB student Olamide Majeodunmi hosted an exciting session that gave members a good taste into what a real assessment centre would be like. This came complete with a quick situational judgement quiz and a fun group work session in which we had to come up with new and original solutions to an Enterprise business problem before presenting it to the ‘judging panel’. Participants left with personalised, individual feedback on their performance as well as good experience of the types of tasks they’ll have to do during a real assessment centre so that there hopefully aren’t any nasty surprises on the day. Another round of free pizza rounded off the session and a terrific first term for Women in Finance.

We hope everyone had a lovely break and here’s to an even better 2020 for WiF!

Kind Regards,

Yasmine Dajani
