A global list of the most highly cited researchers has found three academics from the College of Medical and Dental Sciences to be among the most influential researchers as determined by their peers around the globe – those who have consistently won recognition in the form of high citation counts over a decade.
Placement on the list has been recognized as a significant achievement for those named and marks an increase on previous years. The Clarivate Analytics Web of Science serves as the basis for regular listings of researchers whose citation records position them in the top 1% by citations for their field and year.
Eight academics in total from across the University of Birmingham are featured in this year's list. Those included from the College of Medical and Dental Sciences are:
- Professor Paulus Kirchhof – Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine
- Professor Gregory YH Lip – Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine
- Professor Laura Piddock – Professor of Microbiology
This year’s list continues to recognise researchers whose citation records position them in the very highest strata of influence and impact as it includes 17 Nobel laureates, including two announced this year: James P. Allison, Physiology or Medicine, and William D. Nordhaus, Economic Sciences. Also included are 56 Clarivate Analytics Citation Laureates – individuals who, through citation analysis, have been identified as researchers ‘of Nobel class’ and potential Nobel Prize recipients.
