The Cancer Biology and Therapeutics Team at the University of Birmingham is a leading interdisciplinary group advancing translational cancer research through the integration of molecular biology, epigenetics, metabolism, and therapeutic innovation.

We focus on understanding the fundamental mechanisms that drive cancer initiation, progression, and therapeutic resistance, with particular emphasis on iron metabolism, epigenetic regulation, and metabolic reprogramming across diverse cancer types, specifically colorectal and liver cancers. A central theme of our work explores how cancer cells rewire energy pathways in response to hormonal signalling and epigenetic modifications, uncovering vulnerabilities that can be therapeutically targeted.

Our research spans from molecular characterisation and target identification through to preclinical validation. We are particularly engaged in drug repurposing and combination strategies, leveraging existing therapeutics to enhance efficacy, overcome resistance, and accelerate clinical translation.
