Our last update was in November just after our ever-popular careers fair, and we haven’t slowed down yet!
Before Christmas a group of students took a trip to London to visit the Science Museum. They had a great day exploring the exhibitions, a highlight of which was the Cosmonaut exhibition that had a full history of space travel including loads of astronomical paraphernalia such as parts of satellites and old space suits. For some of the group it was their first time visiting London and the Science Museum and they really enjoyed it. Of course we got an obligatory tube selfie too!
Fast forward to the New Year and EESE Soc put a team together to enter the EPS University Challenge organised by MathSoc. Here we were challenged to tough general knowledge questions and pitted ourselves against other societies from across the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Unfortunately EESE were knocked out in the first round after a tough tie-break question but don’t worry we did you proud and we had a great time taking part, even raised some money for charity too.
In February we brought back one of our most popular events from the past: Roller Disco! A group of us went along to get our skate on and it was great to be joined by some members of the Mechanical Engineering Society too. There was some competition between the electrical and mechanical engineers to see who had the best moves on skates which resulted in a few impressive bruises. Everyone who went had a great time and are already asking for a return trip!
Throughout the year the two EESE football teams have been training hard. The EESE Shockers and EESE Chargers have both now completed their leagues and are very pleased to say that the Shockers came a triumphant 2nd in the league. Congratulations to both teams!
Our latest event was a trip to the Gadget Show Live, held at the NEC in Birmingham. This was a popular event and our tickets sold out very quickly. A group headed to the NEC at the end of March to see the latest gadgets and technology on show. The day was full of trying out new games and toys, and hearing what would be best sellers over the next year. A highlight for some was being able to test out the new electric Telsa cars which can park themselves with no human input! There were also a lot of virtual reality devices on show, with students trying out the new Samsung Gear VR and Oculus rift devices.
EESE Soc have also held our AGM and elected a new committee! The outgoing committee were pleased to tell our members about the successful year we have had and recap our activities. Your newly elected committee for 2016-2017 is:
- Chair: Moushami Verma
- Vice-Chair: Usman Tanweer
- Secretary: Nimra Saleem
- Treasurer: Oke Ojameruaye
- Social Secretary: Joe Ironside
- Sports Officer: Ellis Wilcox
- Publicity Officer: Ify Wilcox
The new committee have some great ideas so watch out for some fantastic new events next year!
As we are now a member of the new School of Engineering we are also looking forward to running events with fellow engineers in the Civil and Mechanical Societies, with some great plans already in the works so again watch this space.
I'd like to finish my final update as outgoing Chair by thanking all members of the society who have made events so much fun and making the organising worthwhile. A massive thanks to all staff and alumni who have supported us and come to events; we couldn't have managed without you! With the tremendous year we’ve had we’re hoping to get on our hands on one of the prestigious EPS Societies’ Awards. If you are or have been part of EESE Soc, or have enjoyed reading about our activities this year please nominate us!
With best wishes and farewell from me,
Outgoing chair and soon-to-be Birmingham alumna
